Andy Hetzel's backside shifty at Breckenridge in 1993
It is a remarkable thing about snowboarding that we went through a time of realizing that we were not skateboarding and did not have to grab our board. The trick was simply look really good while doing it. Very few embraced the “shifty” more than Andy Hetzel, and with good reason; very few people could make a grabless air look as good.
1993 was the peak of shifties and I had recently parted ways with my last real job to shoot snowboarding full time. That meant a road trip to the hallowed grounds of breckenridge which had been holding one of the biggest contests in snowboarding for years. I shot a lot of film that day.
