Classic Russell Winfield rail shot from 1993
In 1993 I spent the better part of a month with the legendary Ride Snowboard team, first in Pacific Beach and then in Bear Lakes riding Big Bear and Snow Summit. These were progressive days with a lot of the team pushing the limits of switch riding and of jibbing. Manmade rails were still a relatively new innovation in parks and they got a lot of traffic. The sessions were groundbreaking, with Dale Rehberg, Jason Ford, Jake Blattner and Devun Walsh all taking turns in front of Jon Boyer’s 16mm camera. Jamie Lynn even rolled though. And of course there was Russell Winfield. When he hit this rail at Summit it was an instant classic. The facial, the PD shirt, the classic Ride board, and that style. Over time the photo became iconic as it perfectly froze this moment in snowboarding history.
